In 1982, after having owned 10 New York dealerships, Robert E. Crabtree, Sr. partnered with Fred Haas who owned several Texas dealerships. They knew the marketplace in Connecticut could prove to be fruitful in the retail automotive industry.
Originally, Colonial Toyota resided in Stratford, but the store relocated to their current Milford location. Gannett Publishing Company once owned the property where two billboards stood. Many businesses bypassed the property, but Mr. Crabtree knew how to make it work and made a deal to buy it.
That was in 1985, and the building still stands to this day. Since then, we’ve changed the way car dealerships operate in Connecticut. We were the first dealership to open on Saturdays for service and also the first to spot-deliver cars.

The history of Colonial Toyota is a great story My father, Robert E. Crabtree Sr., who owned 10 dealers in New York, and Fred Haas, owner of multiple dealerships in Texas, became partners and acquired Ct. Operations in 1982. Colonial and Westport Toyota was a package deal. Colonial Toyota was a satellite store to Westport Toyota, and was located on Barnum Avenue Stratford. My father was a great visionary and when he recognized the marketplace, he knew Colonial Toyota could be a dominating retail automobile dealership, but that required moving to a better location.
The property as it stands today became available because of my father’s clever, tenacious approach. The property was owned by Gannett Publishing Co. and displayed two huge, old-style V-shaped billboards. The property was available, but nobody knew what to do with the challenge of the billboards. What appeared to be a challenging dilemma had a simple solution. I recall when he told me of the great location. The problem was how to get around the billboards. While he was driving down I-95, it dawned on him to make a deal with Gannett to buy the property. He constructed a modern, pylon-style billboard. What a win-win, because Gannett sold the property, yet still took advantage of the location and added two more billboards that still stand today.
Of course, the Crabtree Family was able to then relocate the diamond in the rough, Colonial Toyota to Milford, CT in 1985. The past 29 years, Colonial Toyota has changed the way the auto industry is conducted in CT. Colonial was the first dealer to open on Saturday for service, and the first dealer to spot-deliver cars. I went to Colonial Toyota to just browse. I was looking to get a car but wasn't in any rush. Upon arriving to the lot, Mr. Mao greeted me. I have a Highlander but was thinking of buying a Hybrid Highlander or Hybrid Grand Highlander. After browsing the lot and not finding anything there to my specifications, Mr. Mao took me inside to look on the computer and showed me the extensive the options and features of different models - about which he was extremely knowledgeable . Fortunately, there happened to be a Highlander Hybrid that was coming to the dealership in about 3 weeks which I was considering - however, I left the dealership still not 100% sure this was the car for me. While on the computer, Mr. Mao had also shown me a Land Cruiser. A few days later, I called Mr. Mao to see if he was able to meet me to test drive one. Although he was not at work that day, HE SPONTANEOUSLY OFFERED TO COME IN ON HIS DAY OFF TO MEET ME to show me the car. I test drove a black Land Cruiser 1958 edition and fell in love with it and put a deposit down that day but wanted to add some accessories. Mr. Mao walked me through the process to customize the car and gave me frequent updates about the status of my Land Cruiser. I picked the vehicle up yesterday and it was out front waiting for me and Mr. Mao was there to meet me. He took the time to show me all the different controls on the car and how to work them as well as set up Apple Car Play, and more. I couldn't be happier with my experience at Colonial Toyota, specifically working with Mr. Mao. I will definitely be purchasing my next vehicle there with Mr. Mao! - Amy Shenasky O'Leary
